I am stoked! I am following a more aggressive training plan this time around–it involves longer distances on the weekends more frequently, one time trial/pace exercise a week, and one dedicated “fun run” with my buddies each Sunday (these are not timed or a set length, and I plan to use them as junk runs/social time!) :)
I have a broken in pair of Kinvara3s, a stockpile of powerbar gels, a pair of candy red running shorts, and a lot of enthusiasm! This time I know what I am getting myself into, and I know I can survive it, so I am excited to see if I can improve my race time and I am really looking forward to starting the journey again. :)
Just a heads up, those of you who loved last year’s Dart & Dash from Lululemon will likely also love the Fast Track short they recently released. :)
My running buddies are awesome. :)

This weekend we went running even though it was super cold (for Richmond)! :) On Saturday I made the terrible decision to go it alone for three miles as the sky slushed down a mixture of heavy wind, rain, and snow! Sunday was much more fun–a 5.5 mile trail run with the crossfit Endurance Rebels on the Buttermilk Trail. :) Our friend Audrey took some action shots of us (see above). ;)

I ran with a new group yesterday evening. MAN. Running in the winter when the temps actually feel like winter is no joke. Richmond is a really temperate city most of the time so admittedly I am spoiled–but the hair at the base of my neck FROZE yesterday, so I think it’s safe to say that it was uncomfortably cool. ;) Still, I suited up, I set my jaw, and went out with the group. :) I am pretty shy, especially when it comes to sharing something I love doing so much alone, so I had to screw up all my nerve yesterday when I was walking to the meeting place. I don’t know if that makes me weird, since I know running can be a very good way to meet people and socialize, but I am really cagey about group runs.
The group was really nice–I was way early because of nerves–but once they started showing up they each introduced themselves and were welcoming. I am hugely outclassed though–most of the group had one (or more) marathons under their belt and they were talking about finishing times in the neighborhood of three hours and thirty minutes. It’s cool, I have a GREAT poker face–they never knew how intimidated I was. Probably. ;) These guys are definitely fast (way faster than I am) but I think it’s good because it will give me an opportunity to push myself harder at least once a week, since I really don’t make myself do drills or run for time when I’m by myself. That streak of green? That would be sprinting the floodwall, which turned into coughing forever while gritting my way through the rest of the run. ;) Running post-bronchitis has also posed a bit of a challenge. They were nice about it, but I was audibly wheezy and gross for the rest of the run and maybe will bring my inhaler when I go back out with them next week. ;)
We ran a nice variation of one of my favorite routes, though, which was cool. We started out on Broad Street and ran down through Shockoe to the floodwall, my bread and butter route. Then they changed it up at the Suntrust parking lot and we deviated towards the trails, which was really beautiful because the sun was setting while we ran beside the river. I hadn’t taken this route back across before (I have always chosen one of the two main bridges, Manchester or Lee), but I think I’ll mix it in regularly from now on. :) I split off from the group at the entrance to Tredegar Iron Works, since they were heading back to our starting place and I was going to be running the remaining mile and change back home instead. :)
I was glad I went out and even though I am not as strong as these guys, it will be fun to see if I can eventually catch up. :)
